JD.com has formed a Pet Quality Ecosystem Alliance with 48 institutions, launching a Pet Gold Selection quality standard for self-operated pet food with a 100x compensation mechanism for false ingredient labels or substandard quality. The platform covers all testing costs and ensures every self-operated pet medication carries Ministry of Agriculture approval numbers.
The ecosystem integrates 5,500 licensed veterinarians available 24/7 online with an average 8-second response time, linked to 11,000 partnered offline pet hospitals nationwide for tiered care. A Pet Nutrition Center co-created with Royal Canin and MAG provides science-based nutrition education, covering recovery-phase nutrition, disease prevention, and prescription diet pairing.
The move comes as Meituan simultaneously launched a pet prescription drug full-chain system with same-city delivery across 300+ cities, highlighting intensifying platform competition in Chinese pet retail. JD is building depth through quality assurance and veterinary telehealth, while Meituan builds breadth through local life services and instant retail.
The 100x compensation standard creates a powerful consumer trust signal addressing the quality credibility gap in Chinese pet food, particularly relevant amid ongoing consumer trust events for both imported and domestic brands. For manufacturers, the Pet Gold Selection effectively creates a new quality gate for accessing one of China’s largest e-commerce channels.
