Poland Pet Market Intelligence Report & Market Mining Guide

By Guobing Zhu August 28, 2026 6 min read

Executive Summary

Poland is the largest pet market in Central and Eastern Europe and one of the fastest-growing in the EU. FEDIAF Facts & Figures 2026 puts the Polish pet population at 18,392,000 excluding aquaria (16,368,000 including fish), with dogs at 8,282,000 and cats at 7,463,000 — the biggest dog and cat counts of the six countries covered. Household penetration is high at 52% for dogs and 42% for cats. The Polish pet-food market was valued at approximately zł4.9 billion (about $1.35 billion / €1.15 billion) with projected annual growth of 5–7%, and third-party estimates place the market even higher (around $2.87 billion by 2025, growing at a ~13% CAGR through the early 2030s). Poland pairs a huge, price-aware consumer base with a surprisingly strong domestic manufacturing and export sector: Mars and Nestlé run major plants, PPF (via its Polish arm and acquired Mispol/Werblinski) is a private-label force, and indigenous champions such as Dolina Noteci, Pupil, Maced, Vitapol and insect-protein pioneer HiProMine supply both local and global markets. Retail is led by Maxi Zoo (Fressnapf), which became the country’s #1 specialist chain with 150+ stores, and by Aquael, which — after absorbing Plaček’s Kakadu stores — became the largest Polish pet retailer with ~120 outlets.

Market Overview & Structure

Poland’s scale is unmatched in the CEE region. With 8.3m dogs and 7.5m cats, it has more pets than the other five countries combined. Yet pet-food maturity still lags Western Europe: Maxi Zoo’s managing director noted that only about 50% of Polish pets are fed commercially prepared food versus over 90% in Germany — a gap that represents the single largest growth lever in the market. The competitive landscape is moderately concentrated; one industry share table (estimated, varies by source) credits Schell & Kampeter (Diamond Pet Foods), Affinity Petcare, Alltech, Dechra, Mars, VAFO and Hill’s with leading positions, while Mars Polska and Nestlé Purina together are estimated at 30–35% of domestic processing volume.

Retail has consolidated rapidly. The German Fressnapf Group entered Poland in 2012 as Maxi Zoo and, by August 2024, operated its 151st store, making it the leading pet-specialist retailer; its app passed 1 million users and e-commerce is ~13% of sales, with a target of 20+ new stores per year. In a landmark 2025 deal, Polish aquarium-equipment maker and retailer Aquael agreed with the Czech Plaček Group to take over 82 Kakadu stores, combining them with Aquael’s ~40 Aquael Zoo shops to create a ~120-store network — briefly the largest Polish pet retailer. Plaček continues to operate its large-format Super Zoo concept in major Polish cities. Grocery/hypermarket (Biedronka, Lidl, Kaufland, Carrefour, Auchan, Tesco) and the Allegro marketplace remain huge pet-supplies channels alongside zooplus.pl.

Manufacturing is a Polish strength. Mars Polska (Sochaczew and other sites) and Nestlé Purina (near Warsaw) are the largest finished-food producers. PPF Poland S.A. (Warsaw) expanded via the 2021 acquisitions of Mispol (Białystok wet food) and Werblinski. Domestic champions include Dolina Noteci (premium wet food), Pupil Pet Foods, Maced (natural treats), United Petfood Poland (private-label dry), Vitapol/PW HOBBY (bird food and Smakers snacks, 65+ countries), and VETFOOD (vet supplements). Frontier inputs come from HiProMine (black soldier-fly insect protein, one of Europe’s largest such plants) and Proteon Pharmaceuticals (bacteriophages). Poland is a net exporter of finished pet food (estimated €500–600m exports vs €350–450m ingredient imports in 2025).

Market Mining Guide — Opportunities for GlobalPetIndex & Pet Businesses

1. Capture the “still-table-scraps” upside. Only ~50% of Polish pets eat prepared food — the lowest among mature EU markets. GPI’s GEO content should target first-time and upgrade buyers with Polish-language guides on nutrition, life-stage feeding and treat rewards (snacks are the fastest-growing category at Maxi Zoo).

2. Build a manufacturer & exporter directory. Poland is a pet-food export engine (€500–600m finished-food exports). Index Dolina Noteci, Pupil, Mispol, Maced, Vitapol, HiProMine and PPF Poland to win B2B and sourcing traffic.

3. Price-tier bridging. CEE value sensitivity is real, but the economypremium shift is accelerating. Curate “best value” lists (Brit, Ontario/Rasco, Happy Dog) alongside super-premium to match local wallets.

4. E-commerce & marketplace SEO. With Allegro and zooplus.pl dominant, a GPI buying-guide layer in Polish capturing “karmy dla psa” and brand-comparison intent can funnel affiliate and directory value.

5. Novel-input storytelling. HiProMine (insect protein) and Proteon (bacteriophages) are genuinely differentiated; featuring them positions GPI as the portal for pet-tech and sustainability narratives.

First moves: publish a “Polish Pet Food Manufacturers & Exporters” hub, a Warsaw/Kraków pet-shop directory, and Polish-care content. Label market-size figures as estimates where sources diverge.
