Understanding the Bearded Dragon

Bearded dragons are medium-sized lizards that typically reach eighteen to twenty-four inches in length, including the tail, and live ten to fifteen years with proper care. Their name derives from the expandable throat pouch, or beard, which can be darkened and puffed out as a defensive display or during social communication. In captivity, bearded dragons are known for their calm demeanor, tolerance of handling, and individual personalities that range from bold and curious to relaxed and sedentary.

Enclosure Requirements

Size

The minimum enclosure size for an adult bearded dragon is a four-foot by two-foot by two-foot enclosure, which provides one hundred twenty gallons of volume. Larger is always better, and many keepers now recommend four-foot by two-foot by two-foot as the minimum, with six-foot enclosures providing even more opportunity for a proper temperature gradient and enrichment. Juvenile bearded dragons can be started in smaller enclosures, such as a forty-gallon breeder tank, and upgraded as they grow. The enclosure must have a secure, ventilated lid or front-opening doors.

Substrate

Substrate choice for bearded dragons is a topic of debate, but the consensus among experienced keepers and reptile veterinarians has shifted away from loose substrates such as sand for young dragons due to the risk of impaction, a potentially fatal intestinal blockage that occurs when substrate is ingested. Safe options include solid, non-particle substrates such as reptile carpet, ceramic or slate tile, paper towels, or non-adhesive shelf liner. Tile has the additional advantage of helping to wear down nails naturally.

For adult bearded dragons in excellent health with proper husbandry, a bioactive setup with a soil-sand-clay mix can provide enrichment and allow for natural digging behavior. However, this is an advanced approach that requires thorough research and should not be attempted by beginners.

Furnishings

The enclosure should provide both enrichment and functional elements. A basking platform, such as a flat rock, piece of slate, or sturdy branch, should be placed under the heat lamp. Branches and climbing structures allow for exercise and natural behaviors. At least one hide on the warm side and one on the cool side provide security and retreat options. A shallow water dish may be provided, though bearded dragons rarely drink from standing water and obtain most of their hydration from their diet and from regular misting.

Temperature and Heating

Bearded dragons are ectothermic, meaning they rely on external heat sources to regulate their body temperature. In captivity, this is achieved through a temperature gradient that allows the dragon to move between warmer and cooler areas to thermoregulate.

The Temperature Gradient

The basking surface temperature, measured with an infrared temperature gun, should reach one hundred to one hundred ten degrees Fahrenheit for adults, and slightly higher, one hundred five to one hundred fifteen degrees, for juveniles, who require higher temperatures for digestion and growth. The warm side ambient air temperature should be eighty-five to ninety-five degrees Fahrenheit. The cool side ambient air temperature should be seventy-five to eighty-five degrees Fahrenheit. Nighttime temperatures can safely drop to sixty-five to seventy-five degrees Fahrenheit. If the room temperature falls below sixty-five degrees at night, a ceramic heat emitter, which produces heat without light, should be used to maintain appropriate nighttime temperatures.

Heat Sources

A basking bulb, which is a white or clear incandescent or halogen bulb, provides the focused heat for the basking spot. The bulb should be placed at one end of the enclosure to create the temperature gradient. The wattage required depends on the enclosure size, the distance from the basking spot, and the ambient room temperature, and it should be adjusted to achieve the target basking temperature. All heat sources must be connected to a thermostat to prevent dangerous overheating, and bulbs must be protected by a guard cage to prevent burns.

Colored bulbs, including red and blue night bulbs, should not be used. They disrupt the bearded dragon’s photoperiod and can cause stress. Ceramic heat emitters provide nighttime heat without visible light.

Lighting: The Non-Negotiable Requirement

Proper lighting is the single most critical aspect of bearded dragon care and the area in which mistakes are most commonly made. Inadequate lighting causes metabolic bone disease, a devastating and preventable condition.

UVB Lighting

Bearded dragons require ultraviolet B (UVB) light to synthesize vitamin D3, which is essential for calcium absorption. Without adequate UVB, dietary calcium cannot be utilized regardless of how much is provided, leading to metabolic bone disease characterized by soft, deformed bones, fractures, tremors, seizures, and eventually death.

The gold standard for UVB lighting is a linear fluorescent tube, either T5 high-output or T8, that spans approximately two-thirds to three-quarters of the enclosure length. Compact coil UVB bulbs are inadequate for bearded dragons, as they do not produce sufficient UVB over a wide enough area. The UVB bulb should be placed on the same side of the enclosure as the basking bulb, so the dragon receives UVB while basking, as they would in nature.

The strength of the UVB bulb and its distance from the basking area must be matched. A T5 10.0 or 12 percent UVB bulb should be placed approximately twelve to fifteen inches from the basking spot if mounted above a screen lid, or slightly further if mounted inside the enclosure without a screen barrier. UVB output declines over time, and bulbs must be replaced according to the manufacturer’s recommendations, typically every six to twelve months for T5 bulbs and every six months for T8 bulbs, even if they continue to produce visible light.

A solar meter that measures UV index is a valuable investment for serious keepers. The target UV index at the basking spot is approximately 3.0 to 5.0, which replicates the UV exposure bearded dragons experience in their natural habitat.

Photoperiod

Bearded dragons require a consistent day-night cycle. The lights should be on for twelve to fourteen hours per day and off for ten to twelve hours at night. A timer automates this schedule and is strongly recommended. During the night period, the enclosure should be completely dark, with no colored night bulbs.

Diet and Nutrition

The bearded dragon diet changes significantly over the course of their life, shifting from primarily insect-based in juveniles to primarily plant-based in adults.

Juvenile Diet (0 to 12 Months)

Growing bearded dragons require a diet high in protein to support rapid growth. Juveniles should be fed appropriately sized live insects two to three times daily, as many as they will consume in a ten to fifteen minute period. Suitable feeder insects include dubia roaches, which are nutritionally superior to crickets; crickets; black soldier fly larvae; and silkworms. Mealworms and superworms should be limited due to their hard exoskeletons, which are difficult to digest.

A fresh salad of leafy greens and vegetables should be offered daily, even though juveniles may eat little of it initially. Establishing the habit of eating greens early is important for the transition to an adult diet.

Adult Diet (12 Months and Older)

Adult bearded dragons should consume a diet that is approximately eighty percent plant matter and twenty percent insects. A fresh salad should be offered daily, consisting primarily of dark, leafy greens including collard greens, mustard greens, dandelion greens, turnip greens, and endive. These should be supplemented with other vegetables such as butternut squash, bell peppers, and green beans.

Fruits can be offered as occasional treats but should not be a significant portion of the diet due to their high sugar content. Safe fruits include blueberries, raspberries, papaya, and mango. Spinach, kale, and Swiss chard should be fed in moderation, as they are high in oxalates, which bind calcium and reduce its absorption. Lettuce, particularly iceberg lettuce, has minimal nutritional value and should be avoided.

Live insects should be offered two to three times per week for adults. Each feeding should consist of as many insects as the dragon will eat in ten to fifteen minutes. The staple feeder should be dubia roaches or crickets, with other feeders offered for variety.

Supplementation

All insects should be dusted with a calcium supplement at most feedings. For juveniles, calcium should be provided at every feeding. For adults, calcium should be provided at most insect feedings. A multivitamin supplement should be used once or twice per week. Insects should be gut-loaded, meaning they are fed a nutritious diet for twenty-four to forty-eight hours before being offered to the dragon, which improves their nutritional value.

Hydration

Bearded dragons obtain most of their water from their diet, and dehydration is a common problem in captivity. Strategies to promote hydration include offering fresh greens daily, which provide moisture; misting the dragon lightly with water once or twice daily, which allows them to lick droplets from their snout and body; and offering weekly baths in shallow, lukewarm water for ten to fifteen minutes, during which they may drink.

Handling and Temperament

Bearded dragons are among the most handleable of all reptiles. They should be supported under the chest and hindquarters, never grabbed or restrained tightly. Handling sessions should be initiated when the dragon is awake and alert, and they should be kept brief initially, gradually increasing in duration as the dragon becomes comfortable.

Signs of stress during handling include a darkened beard, mouth gaping, hissing, and attempts to escape. If these signs are observed, return the dragon to the enclosure and try again later. Regular, gentle handling builds trust, and many bearded dragons come to seek out interaction with their owners.

Common Health Issues

Metabolic bone disease is the most common preventable health problem in bearded dragons. It is caused by inadequate UVB lighting, inadequate calcium supplementation, or both, and it results in soft, deformed bones, difficulty moving, tremors, and fractures. Treatment involves correcting the husbandry deficiencies and, in advanced cases, veterinary intervention with calcium injections and supportive care.

Respiratory infections cause sneezing, nasal discharge, open-mouth breathing, and lethargy. They are typically caused by inadequate temperatures or excessive humidity and require veterinary treatment with antibiotics.

Impaction, a blockage of the digestive tract, is caused by ingestion of inappropriate substrate, oversized prey items, or inadequate temperatures for digestion. Signs include straining to defecate, decreased appetite, and lethargy. Treatment ranges from warm baths and gentle abdominal massage to veterinary intervention.

Parasites, both internal and external, are common in bearded dragons. Regular fecal examinations by a reptile veterinarian allow for early detection and treatment. Mites appear as small black, red, or white dots moving on the skin and require treatment of both the dragon and the enclosure.
