Western European food retail is no longer a simple contest for the most stores or the highest corporate revenue. It is a contest to capture a larger share of each household’s recurring spend. A new Western Europe retail Top 15 table, built on NielsenIQ Panel On Demand data, ranks banners by 2025 share of wallet (SOW) — the portion of a household’s supermarket-category spending that goes to one retailer. For pet suppliers and the manufacturers in the GlobalPetIndex directory, the ranking is a map of where pet-care shelf space, private-label programmes and replenishment partnerships will be won or lost.

| 3 | Carrefour | France | 27.4% | −0.8pp | Hypermarket → omnichannel pressure |

Eleven of the 15 banners lost wallet share year on year. Value has become structural, not cyclical — and pet care is becoming a way for mass retailers to defend visit frequency, private-label penetration and loyalty data.
Why Pet Care Is the Strategic Category
Europe had 140 million pet-owning households and 306 million pets in 2024 (FEDIAF, June 2026), with pet-food sales of €29.4 billion. Specialist chains are scaling fast: Fressnapf / Maxi Zoo reported 2025 sales of €3.7 billion and 2,919 stores by Q1 2026, while Zooplus runs local shops across 30 countries with subscription replenishment. In the UK, Pets at Home shows the ecosystem model — vet health plans and Easy Repeat reached 15.2% of consumer revenue, up 16.8%.
The winners build a three-tier pet-care architecture: value essentials that defend against discounters, trusted mainstream brands (see the global pet food top 10), and affordable-premium functional products. Read the full competitive picture in our Global Pet Food Companies 2025 analysis.
Private Label Is Large — But Brands Still Matter
Circana (2023) put retailer brands at 34% of a €10.8bn European pet-food market, yet Western European private-label pet-food share rose only 0.3pp between 2022 and 2024. Mars and Nestlé Purina together still held 45% of Western European pet food in 2024, with stronger loyalty in premium and cat food. The lesson for the Top 15: keep destination brands, use entry-tier own label to defend value, and build credible affordable-premium exclusives. See our private-label analysis.
Omnichannel Should Be Built Around Replenishment
Pet food and litter are ideal subscription products — recurring, predictable, often heavy. Ocado‘s +2.1pp gain and Rewe‘s omnichannel bet show digital convenience works when it removes friction. For Musti Group and Fressnapf, urban compact stores expose the full range digitally while handling urgent essentials. The BARK Q1 FY2027 results show how a dog brand is diversifying beyond subscriptions into retail and marketplaces.
Sustainability & Compliance Are Now SKU-Level
The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, Regulation (EU) 2025/40, generally applies from 12 August 2026, forcing suppliers to supply materials, recycled content, recyclability and EPR data. Regulation (EU) 2026/1818 on dog-and-cat welfare and traceability enters into force 30 August 2026. Retailers connected to live-animal or product listings need supplier-level data now.
Strategic Agenda for the Top 15
- Three-tier architecture — value / mainstream / affordable-premium, analysed by species.
- Replenishment as loyalty — auto-repeat and predictive reminders across the household basket.
- Stores with a reason to exist — advice, trial, weighing, partner events.
- Connect to preventive health — partner rather than build clinics.
- Product data as infrastructure — one governed record for claims, packaging, carbon and traceability.
