Cambodia's pet industry is early-stage but is the most visibly commercialising of the five markets in this set, driven by a rising urban middle class in Phnom Penh and a growing tendency among younger, higher-income households to treat cats and dogs as family members rather than as guard or utility animals. Retail is dominated by independent pet shops, veterinary clinics and social-commerce sellers, with almost all pet food and accessories imported from Thailand, Vietnam and China; modern grocery channels carry only a narrow pet food assortment. Regional trade organisers (e.g. Pet Fair South East Asia) explicitly flag Cambodia as an emerging growth market, and cross-border veterinary/pet-service operators have begun entering Phnom Penh. Countervailing local factors are severe: an extremely high free-roaming dog population, endemic rabies with one of the world's highest per-capita human rabies death rates, and a persistent dog meat trade, all of which mean the raw dog count vastly overstates the addressable pet-consumer base.
