Overview
Nestlé Purina PetCare is preparing to hold the official grand opening of its new $550 million pet food factory in Batavia, Ohio this August, marking the company’s first ground-up US pet food manufacturing facility in 51 years and one of the largest single-site private-sector manufacturing investments in the Cincinnati region in recent decades. The 1.3-million-square-foot, ten-floor facility produces dry cat and dog food for Purina Pro Plan, Purina ONE, and Dog Chow, with capacity to feed roughly 8 million pets annually when fully ramped.
Key Facts
The factory, Purina’s 24th in the United States, currently employs more than 340 people and is on track to expand beyond 500 positions as production scales. Purina CEO and President Nina Leigh Krueger described the investment as a long-horizon commitment to domestic production: “By investing in state-of-the-art manufacturing infrastructure and partnering with committed communities like Clermont County, we’re building a facility that will serve pet owners and their beloved companions for generations to come.” Factory manager Mike Ferritto framed the site as the future of US pet food manufacturing, noting that “the factory combines world-class innovation with the talented workforce here in Clermont County.”
Batavia was announced in October 2020 at $5.5 billion of pet food manufacturing capex — funded out of Nestlé’s ongoing global investment cycle. Construction was originally targeted for a 2023 launch but was delayed by contractor turnover and COVID-related supply chain disruption. After more than two years of equipment installation, commissioning and testing, the factory is now producing and distributing into the US market with the August ceremony formally marking completion of the build phase. Site selection leveraged Cincinnati’s broader food-and-flavoring ecosystem of more than 300 suppliers and complements Purina’s existing network across the Midwest.
Market Implications
The factory incorporates heavy automation and digital execution systems, with a dedicated “Manufacturing Experience Center” for hosting government, community, and industry visitors. Sustainability targets include zero waste-to-landfill, recovered process heat and water, and a roadmap to 100% renewable electricity — aligned with Nestlé Group’s 2030 net-zero operational impact commitment. The Purina Foundation has also committed more than $346,000 to Clermont County emergency services, law enforcement programs, and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center even before the facility reaches full staffing levels, signaling long-horizon community integration. For pet food contract manufacturers, ingredients suppliers, packaging vendors, and logistics operators in the Ohio Valley corridor, the Batavia ramp-up creates a multi-year B2B procurement pipeline and supports regional cluster maturation around advanced pet food production.
