Arken Zoo Gaston stores — Arken Zoo, the Swedish pet chain owned by Nordic market leader Musti Group, has taken over three Gaston-branded pet stores previously operated within the ICA Gruppen grocery ecosystem. The transfer strengthens Arken Zoo’s presence in key Swedish catchments and continues Musti Group’s steady consolidation of the Nordic specialty market.

Arken Zoo Gaston stores explained

The move reflects a wider pattern in which dedicated pet specialists absorb pet-retail space from generalist grocers that are refocusing on core food operations. For Musti Group, adding established locations with existing customer bases is a faster route to density than greenfield openings.

Specialists over generalists

Pet ownership in the Nordics remains high, and shoppers increasingly favour specialists for the breadth of assortment, nutrition advice and services they offer. By taking over the Gaston sites, Arken Zoo converts generalist shelf space into a full specialty format, typically lifting basket size and category depth.

The transaction is a small but telling example of how the specialty channel keeps gaining ground, one location at a time, as grocers step back from the category.
