Timor-Leste Pet Industry Database

Timor-Leste has no formal pet industry and no pet market statistics of any kind; it is the least-documented of the five markets in this set. The only quantitative companion-animal data ever produced is a 2013-2014 academic roaming-dog survey undertaken to prepare for a possible rabies incursion from eastern Indonesia, which covered urban district capitals only and found a relatively low dog density by regional standards – about 21 people per roaming dog versus the WHO global working average of about 10. Dogs are kept overwhelmingly as free-roaming village and guard animals rather than as companion pets, household incomes are among the lowest in Southeast Asia, and there is no organised pet retail channel, with commercial pet food effectively absent outside a small expatriate and NGO community in Dili. The country's first rabies outbreak was reported in 2024, so what limited animal-population attention exists is now directed at disease control rather than at any pet-consumer development.
