How this page was compiled

Every company named on this page comes from the GlobalPetIndex company database. We do not place a manufacturer, a retailer and a service operator on one leaderboard — those business types are not comparable — so the page first maps how the Japan supply base splits by business type, then names the best-documented companies inside each segment.

What “best-documented” means: a published record carrying verifiable company details — website, contact, address and a business description. Coverage is maintained continuously, so the counts on this page move as records are verified or retired.

The GlobalPetIndex database carries 3,646 published company records for Japan, of which 50 are pet food brands — 1.4% of the national total. Everything on this page is drawn from those records, which is why the numbers move: coverage grows as companies are verified and falls as retired records are pulled.

Pet Food Brands in Japan: the shortlist

Ranked on documentation quality rather than name recognition. A company moves up when it has a reported revenue figure, headcount, a working website, a founding year and named product coverage, because those are the things you can check before agreeing to a first call.

1 Petio — — 201-500 1986
2 Inaba Petfood — 300M USD 501-1000 —
3 Petline Corporation — — — —
4 Iris Ohyama Inc. — — 10,001+ —
5 Smack Co., Ltd. — — — —

9 Royal Canin Japon LLC — — — —
10 Kyushu Pet Food Co., Ltd. — — — —
11 Marukan Co., Ltd. — — — —
12 Mitsuya Corporation — — — —

1 of the 12 above publish a revenue figure. The rest are ranked on website, headcount, founding year and product coverage — read a missing revenue cell as a missing disclosure, not as a small company.

What the records show

Across all 50 pet food brands indexed for Japan: 2% carry a checkable company website, 2% a reported revenue figure, 2% a founding year and 6% a headcount. Read those percentages as much as the headline count. High website coverage means you can reach most of the market by email tomorrow; low revenue coverage means almost every commercial conversation has to start with a request rather than a quote.

Product segments represented

Where records name the segments they actually cover, they cluster like this:

How to use this list

This page is built for retail buyers deciding which pet food labels to list.

These are consumer-facing labels, not factories. A fair number of them are produced under contract, so winning the brand does not automatically give you production capacity — check whether the counterparty also appears on the manufacturing side of this directory before you plan around their plant.

Shortlisting on brand familiarity tends to over-weight marketing spend. The ranking below favours documented footprint instead: revenue, headcount, verifiable website and product breadth, which correlates better with whether a listing will actually be serviceable.

If you are planning a category rather than a single listing, sort by the product segments instead of by name. That is usually where the real shelf gaps sit.

How this ranking is built

Every entry comes from the GlobalPetIndex company database. Each record is scored on reported annual revenue, employee or store counts, a working company website, founding year and product coverage, and that score sets the order. Companies with no independently verifiable footprint are left off rather than guessed at. Where two records resolve to the same trading entity under different legal names, only the better-documented one is listed, which is why the visible shortlist is occasionally shorter than the underlying count.

Two different figures circulate on this site for Japan and they are not interchangeable. The 3,646 used here counts published company records for the country; pages aimed at the search engines quote a marginally lower figure for companies currently indexable. Both definitions are set out on the data definitions page.

Frequently asked questions

How many pet food brands operate in Japan?

50 companies in this segment are on record for Japan. Coverage grows as new records pass verification, and drops when a company ceases trading and its record is retired.

Can I contact these companies?

Follow any name in the tables above through to its GlobalPetIndex profile for business type, location and the contact details we hold. 2% of this segment currently has a working website recorded.

Why does a well-known company not appear?

Two reasons, both deliberate. Either its record has not yet cleared verification against an independent source, or it resolves to the same trading entity as another entry filed under a different legal name. We do not pad the list with estimates to fill either gap.

Should I treat the revenue figures as audited accounts?

No. They are figures each company reports publicly or states in its own materials, carried through unchanged. Use them to size a counterparty, not to underwrite one.

How often is this regenerated?

The list rebuilds whenever underlying company records change, so revenue and headcount track the most recent verified data rather than the date this page was first published.
