Fressnapf and rivals accelerate store openings across Europe and North America

Europe’s largest pet retailer is still opening stores faster than it closes them. Fressnapf/Maxi Zoo added roughly 33 outlets in the first quarter of 2026, taking the group to about 2,919 locations. The year before, it opened 195.

Recent openings include Vienna, Warsaw and Budapest, plus a milestone 80th store in Switzerland and a 70th in Hungary.

Pet Store Expansion 2026

Recent openings span Vienna, Warsaw and Budapest, alongside milestone stores including its 80th outlet in Switzerland and 70th in Hungary. In the United States, Tractor Supply — a major seller of pet and animal products — opened around 10 stores in a single month and continues to target more than 100 openings a year toward a base of over 2,400 locations.

Physical retail is not retreating

Grooming, nutrition advice and the ability to collect food or medication the same day are the parts that pure online competitors still struggle to match. That is where most of the new space is going.

Sweden’s Arken Zoo, Canada’s Mondou (which reached its 101st store), Italy’s Zoopark and the US grooming-led franchise Woof Gang have all added locations in recent months.

What it means for suppliers

More stores mean more shelf space. They also mean more competition for it, because chains are widening their own-label ranges at the same time as they take on third-party products.

For brands selling into these networks, listing discussions now happen against the retailer’s own brand as well as against competing suppliers.
